Exceptions
might be Van Dyke’s eccentric dancing in “The Twizzle,”
which is funny sheerly because his body seems to be boneless and moves
in unexpected ways (the unexpected as a fundamental criteria of “funny”),
or similarly Mel Cooley’s (Richard Deacon’s) dance in the
same number, which is funny because people do not normally expect
such a big man—and one seen narratively as a “stick in
the mud”—to be such a good dancer. Another example would
be the “I Am a Fine Musician” number (the only number
ever repeated on the show), which is funny because of its own internal
narrative. |
